Wild dolphins swimming beside a traditional jukung boat at sunrise in Lovina, North Bali

Dolphin Watching in Lovina, North Bali

Every morning before sunrise, traditional jukung boats leave Kaliasem beach to meet the wild dolphins of the Lovina Sea. Chitra Lovina Dolphin Tour is a local family operation based right on that shoreline.

What the morning looks like

  1. 05:45 — Meeting at the beach

We meet you at Kaliasem beach in Lovina, or pick you up from a nearby hotel on request. You board a traditional outrigger jukung with your local captain.

  2. 06:00 — Out on the calm sea

The boat heads roughly one to three kilometres offshore while the sun rises behind the North Bali mountains. The Lovina bay is sheltered, so the water is usually very calm at this hour.

  3. 06:20 — Dolphins in their habitat

Pods of wild spinner and bottlenose dolphins feed here at dawn. We keep the engine slow and hold a respectful distance so the pod decides how close the encounter gets.

  4. 08:00 — Back to shore

You return to the beach in time for breakfast. Longer trips can continue straight into snorkeling at the Lovina coral reef.

Best time and season

  • Dolphins are seen year-round in Lovina; the pods live here permanently.
  • Departures are at 06:00 WITA — dolphins feed near the surface at sunrise and the sea is calmest then.
  • April to October (dry season) usually gives the flattest water and clearest skies.
  • November to March still works well; on rare very windy mornings we reschedule for your safety.
  • Dolphins are wild animals, so sightings are natural and never guaranteed — most mornings the pods do appear.

Boat and safety

  • Traditional outrigger jukung boats crewed by local Kaliasem captains who read these waters daily.
  • Life jackets on board for every guest.
  • Small groups, so nobody is crowded and everyone gets a clear view.
  • Trips are rescheduled at no cost when the sea is unsafe.

How we treat the dolphins

The pods of Lovina are wild and unfed. Our approach keeps the encounter on their terms.

  • Observe dolphins in their natural habitat.
  • Never intentionally chase, surround or cut across a pod.
  • Keep engine noise and speed down near the animals.
  • Follow the captain's instructions at all times.
  • Take all rubbish back to shore — nothing goes into the sea.
